Deadline: May 31, 2011.

The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography is presented annually to a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a panel of experts, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion exhibited during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist.

The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography was established in 1978 following the death of Gene Smith, the legendary American photo essayist. It is today the most prestigious honor in documentary photography. Every year it recognizes a photographer who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to documenting the human condition in the spirit of Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion.

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund independently administers the grant program that provides photographers with the financial freedom to carry out or complete major photographic essays. For 2011, the amount of the grant will be $30,000. An additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition. Awards will be presented in a ceremony held in New York City in early October.

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to identify and produce stories with a strong
journalistic approach and compelling visual narratives. We encourage photographers with
ability to think outside the confines of traditional photojournalism. We are particularly interested
in applications from photographers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Successful candidates will be selected by members of Panos staff and two Panos Profile
photographers. The final decision will be announced at the end of April 2011.

We believe that photojournalism is a powerful tool for telling compelling social, political and cultural stories. We also understand that creating and managing world-class photography assignments requires time, freedom, support and considerable resources.

A note about student grants; this aspect of our grant program is evolving in 2011. Please note that the May 1 entry deadline is for professional photojournalists only.

We congratulate all of our recipients on the powerful and insightful work they created through our grants program, and thank our distinguished judges for elevating our competition.

Feel free to contact us with questions about our Grants for Editorial Photography at

grants@gettyimages.com

Application deadlines: May 1st
Grants will be announced in September.

Grants for Good

We proudly support photographers and communications professionals who use imagery to promote positive change in our world. To that end, we’ve launched our Grants for Good.

Nonprofits need imagery to tell their stories effectively, which is why our Grants for Good provide two grants of $15,000 annually, to cover photographer, filmmaker and agency costs as they create compelling new imagery for the nonprofit of their choice.

Grants recipients may use the entire award to offset shoot expenses, or choose to donate all or part of it directly to their charity and contribute their own time and resources. The photographer and the nonprofit as well as the communications agency involved will be showcased to the media and to our customers.

Ricardo Telles (Porto Alegre, RS,1966).

Noorderlicht Call for Submissions Photofestival 2011

The main exhibition at Noorderlicht 2011, METROPOLIS, City Life in the Urban Age, deals with the role of the city as the nerve centre of modern global society. It is the second part of a diptych, a follow-up to the 2010 theme LAND, Country Life in the Urban Age, which looked at the shrinking role of the countryside worldwide.

The city, as a phenomenon, has an almost schizophrenic character; its many personalities are constantly encountering one another. It is our intention that these multiple personalities will emerge in the structure of the exhibition, running the gamut from utopia to dystopia.

We are looking for photo series that present a distinctive, even idiosyncratic vision on the character
of the modern city. Economic, social or urban planning aspects can each play a role; the series may be literal or metaphorical. We are striving for a global picture; the group exhibition as a whole will be a journey through cities in all parts of the world.

Submissions can be sent to Noorderlicht between now and 31 March, 2011.
